From the Weyerbacher Brewing Company, in Easton, Pa. This is the Verboten, Belgian-style Pale Ale. The label informs us that the Verboten is bottle-conditioned and comes in at 5.9% abv.
Poured into my brandy snifter (because my Duvel glass is in the dishwasher) the Verboten pours a darker shade of golden-orange. Just a touch of cloudiness, and plenty of carbonation, topped with a bright white, thick head. The foam is a full finger thick at pouring, and is quite persistent throughout my beer.
The nose has that fairly typical Belgian punch. Its fairly light, with little hops, some floral notes, and a bit of funk. I hate the smell of kitty litter, but just of touch of it tells me I'm probably really going to enjoy the taste.
Once I sip it, its fairly light and easy drinking. I'm surprised by a little kick of dry, bitter hops in the back of my throat. I know its a pale ale, but the nose doesn't give me the impression of that much hops.
Overall this is a pretty solid beer. I'm glad it is too, I always want to like Weyerbacher brews. There are tons of good things to come from eastern Pa, Weyerbacher, Yuengling, Cheesesteaks, me.
