Harpoon Leviathan

The Harpoon Leviathan is this New England brewery's version of a Barleywine-style ale. Checking in at 10% abv, this is the biggest, boldest brew I've ever had from Harpoon.

Pouring into my snifter, there is very little foam initially. Although, with a bit of a swirl, there's plenty of off-white head. The brew itself is a dark amber color, but still translucent. Just a small amount of lacing clings to the glass after my swirling.

In the nose, I'm really not getting a whole lot. There's just a touch of sweet malts, a tiny bit of soft hops, and a little hint of alcohol. There really isn't much in the aromas giving me any insight as to what's coming.

Once I take a sip, it all comes together. Well, not exactly. The flavor profile coincides directly with what I was getting in the aromas. There's just a touch of malts, very little hops, and a little bit of alcohol burn. It reminds me a lot of a heavily watered-down Brasserie Rochefort.

Sorry Harpoon, I'm a bit disappointed here. I know its 10% and all, but the Leviathan is not nearly as intense as I expected. Its good, don't get me wrong, but the name Leviathan suggested much more to me than what was in my glass.

The Leviathan is relatively easy to drink, tasty, and pretty good. Really my only complain is that its not what I expected. I was debating tonight as to whether I should drink a Palo Santo or Leviathan first. Its a great thing I had the Leviathan first, if it went the other way, I never would have been able to taste the Leviathan.

Aka - drinkable and tasty, but disappointing
