Franziskaner Dunkel Hefe-Weisse

The Franziskaner Dunkel Hefe-Weisse
Sampling this tonight because we have had a few requests for it, and we think it might fill a gap in the shelf. Bottle simply describes it as a dunkel hefe-weisse from Munchen. Bottle doesn't say, but abv is 5.5% according to beeradvocate. Dunkel simply refers to a darker style of hefeweisen, not to be confused with "doppel" or double.

Pours out murky light brown in color. A one finger off white head lingers for a few minutes with very little lacing. There is a steady stream of carbonation coming up from the bottom of the glass. Got a little bit of yeast at the end of the pour which is typical of the style.

Smells like bananas and spices. Hints of bready yeast as well, with a little bit of sweet toffee. Also getting a woody/grainy smell. Reminds me of other hefeweisens with a little more dark malt in there. Maybe a little bit of chalk hidden in there.

It has a medium crisp body with hints of caramel and butterscotch. The wheat malt really shines with notes of roasted plantain  and nuts. Finishes clean with a very dry dark malt taste.  Reminds us a lot of a fuller, rounder version of the Weihenstephaner Hefe.

Having not had any other dunkel weisses, I can't say if this is good for what it is. But for a dark version of a regular Franziskaner, I would say it is pretty good. Medium-bodied with more dry earthy malt than fruity banana sweetness. A soft version of a Weizenbock like the Schneider & Sons Aventinus or the Weihenstephaner Vitus.

Franziskaner Dunkel Hefe-Weisse
T.C.S.H. Rating:  8/10
Aka - Good, drinkable, and crowd-pleasing; but nothing over-the-top.
