Sierra Nevada Anniversary Grand Cru

In honor of their 30 years brewing, Sierra Nevada created a lineup of brews pushing the limits of collaborative brewing. The Grand Cru, the last of the series, is described as a "marriage of oak-aged bigfoot, celebration ale, and fresh pale ale.".

The Sierra Grand Cru pours out a dark amber, or light brown color. Plenty of foam in an off-white color, with nice lacing as it fades slowly. The nose shows plenty of hops, with some sort of caramel or malty character too. I'm also getting a bit of the alcohol on the nose, which isn't surprising at nearly 10% abv.

The taste is a bit surprising! I expected a very malty, boozy, barleywine sort of brew. This is big and full, but much more hops than I expected. There is some nice piney hops, fruity hops, but all blended well with the darker, richer style. It almost reminds me a little of something like the Rochefort 10, or the Arrogant Bastard (but much smoother).

The finish is fairly dry, with nice bitterness, yet a touch toasty and malty at the same time. It is mouth-filling, yet fairly easy to drink. It really is a marriage of styles! Well done!

  1. While the others in the series were very big, bold, and unique I found this last one to be much more drinkable. I wish they made this all year round. Seeing as how the three beers that were blended to make this are my favorite in the world, it makes sense that I'd love it :)
