I'll start this review by stating that I'm a big fan of the Allagash White and Allagash Tripel, so I hope this is good too.
The Curieux, french for curious, is the Allagash Tripel aged for two months in Jim Beam bourbon barrels. Served in a 750mL bottle with a cork and cage. The front label denotes that it was bottled in October 2010, in the midst of 750 cases bottled, and clocking in at 11% abv.
The pour is a cloudy golden/orange color, with a bright white head. Lots and lots of tiny bubbles form a nice thick foam that slowly fades, with great lacing. The aromas are both light and fruity, like I'd expect from a Tripel, but also with a bit of a boozy backbone. Some hints of vanilla, sugars, and tropical fruits.
The flavors are great! The Curieux is exactly what its named for. There's a slight hint of smooth hops, plenty of fruit, nice kick from the alcohol, and it all flows together really well. The finish is crisp, clean, and leaves me waiting for another sip.
Overall, I'm really impressed. There have been a lot of overpriced hype beers lately. I'm happy to announce that I don't think the Allagash Curieux is one of them!
