Shipyard Brewing - Pumpkinhead

I was told at the beginning of August that this Pumpkinhead from Shipyard is the best & most popular beer out there. So far this year I've sorta liked the Buffalo Bills Pumpkin Ale, and really liked the Shipyard Smashed Pumpkin. The Dogfish Head Punkin Ale was awesome, and Southern Tier's Pumking was off the charts phenomenal. So, needless to say, the PumpkinHead had a lot to live up to.

The PumpkinHead pours a light amber color, with a slight haze, almost rust colored. The foam is white, to maybe just a shade darker, like an egg-shell color. The foam is lively at first, not super thick, and dissipates fairly quickly.

The nose is quite fun, lots of spices and a touch of pumpkin. I'm thinking of things like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, among some others. This is definitely spice-dominated in the nose, and the pumpkin is an after-thought.

Once I take a sip, I'm not really tasting much of anything. Actually the first thing to come to mind is Michelob Ultra Amber. It looks like it should be good, it smells like it should be good, but it doesn't taste at all.

Seriously? This was all the hype? A beer that doesn't taste the way it smells? Okay okay, I give it the award for being the most crowd-pleasing and drinkable of the pumpkin beers. But, my compliments stop there. I sound like my dad, but "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed" with this brew.

AKA- I was really expecting better, this is good pumpkin beer for people who don't like pumpkin beer.

  1. Well, I think you hit it on the head, it's the most popular pumpkin beer. I can think of another "most popular" beer that doesn't taste like anything either.

I think this is why Shipyard released the Smashed Pumpkin. They couldn't stop production of the regular pumpkin beer, or change the recipe, so instead they did an imperial version that actually tastes like something.
