This is another of the Dogfish brews that only a crazy group like Dogfish would come up with. This is a re-creation of an old Finnish recipe, with a bit of a twist.
The label describes the Sahtea as based on a traditional 9th Century Finnish recipe. They brew it with rye and juniper, and heat the wort with wood-fired rocks. They then add a little twist to the recipe by adding Black Chai Tea at the end of the boil.
The brew pours out a golden-yellow color, with bright white foam. The foam is fairly thin, and fades quickly. But throughout the duration of my sample, a little bit of bubbles rise from the bottom of the glass.
The nose reminds me a lot of Weihenstephaner. It smells citrusy like a hefe, but with a little more spice. The taste is pretty similar to the nose. Sahtea is very smooth, soft, and lightly sweet. I'm getting some hints of orange peel, lemon, and occasionally the Chai Tea comes through too.
I think this is quite tasty, and I could easily drink the Sahtea on a regular basis. Well done Dogfish, well done.
