Brasserie DuPont - Belgian Saison Ale

Brasserie DuPont - Belgian Saison Ale is a very special treat for me. Thanks to my friend Mike, of Burgersandbrews.net, I have the chance to try a brew I've never tried before. I don't know much of anything about the style of "Saison", but knowing how much I like hefeweizens and beer in general, Mike thought I'd like this too.

It comes in a green bottle, with an antique looking label. Cork and cage holds back the 750mL, 9.5% abv brew. It pours out a hazy, light golden orange color. Foam is plentiful, lots of very small, white bubbles fill the glass. The foam subsides a bit, but I can see bubbles rising the entire time I'm drinking, from all areas of the glass.

It smells just a little bit like a hefe, but with only a touch of that malty, citrus, wheat. Standing up among the mild notes of a hefe is some backbone of hops and even some spice.

In the mouth there is a ton of fizz, and a mountain of flavor. I don't think I've ever experienced this much flavor in such a light-bodied beer before. Usually this type of structure and layered flavors are reserved for the big beers like La Terrible, Grand Cru, and Three Philosophers.

I'm getting some flavors of citrus, mostly lemon and orange peel. I'm also getting a ton of malt and hops too, perfectly balanced that neither dominates the other. There is so much flavor at once, I can barely comprehend all of it at once. In all reality, this is more like an awesome champagne than it is a beer. Just like an awesome champagne (Laurent-Perrier), this is so complicated and delicious, I hardly know how to describe it.

I seriously contemplated inviting some people to join me for this DuPont experience tonight. On one hand, I'm sorry they didn't get to try it. On the other, I'm really happy that I didn't share this with anyone.

  2. Mike, Thank you, that means a lot. It's amazing how many posts I can accumulate without going out of my way to taste new stuff. It's really going to be scary this fall/winter when I get to go to all the big wine tastings here in CT and down in NYC!
