Icardi "Nej" Pinot Nero

Pinot Nero, aka Pinot Noir, from Claudio Icardi was described as "the best Italian Pinot noir...ever!".

Claudio works with several vineyards in northern Italy, both in the Langhe and Monferrato. Some of these vineyards have been in his family since the early 1900's, despite several offers over the years to 'take them off his hands'. All the vineyards that Claudio cares for are farmed organically, and he even has a few that are considered biodynamic.

This pinot noir, Nej, is from a vineyard located in Cascina Sterpone farm in Mango, Piedmont. The grapes are soft-pressed, with a long fermentation and maceration in contact with the skins. During that time they pinch-down and pump-up frequently to ensure that the skins stayed soaked. The wine is then decanted naturally and aged in new French barriques for 18 months.

The wine upon first opening is very, very oaky. At first that's all I can smell or taste. This bottle I allowed to sit out in a decanter for over six hours. After that time, it was like a while new wine.

The color lightened a little, and the aromas are exploding. On the palate it is light and fruity, compared to other northern Italian reds. But compared to other Pinot noir, this is the boldest I've ever tasted.

This is not for someone who likes Hob Nob Pinot noir, this is serious wine. This is big, bold, rich, dry, tannic, and in just two more words: f-ing incredible.

This bottle retails in the low thirtys, which is a fraction of most wines with this quality and reviews. I wish I could afford a case of this, because it is going to be mind-blowing in another five-ten years.
