Three Floyds Alpha King APA

There are certain breweries that enjoy a certain "mythic" status.  Cigar City, Russian River, Goose Island (despite the fact that InBev owns them now) and for me it has been Three Floyds for a long time now.  There is something about a brewery that only distributes in its own state and Chicago (I know, Chi-town is one of the biggest cities in the US) that gets your imagination going.  The exclusivity, the honor, and the fact that only a select few people get to have beer from a single brewery, but I can finally say I have gotten my hands on the Three Floyds product, and I'm impressed.

I would like you all to meet Alpha King.....Alpha King, audience....audience, Alpha King.  Now that you have been properly introduced lets get to the beer.  Alpha King is the flagship APA (American Pale Ale) from this small little brewery out of Munster, Indiana and like the Alphas from "Revenge of the Nerds" it packs a wallop while it yells "NEEEERDS!!"  Scents of peaches, mangoes and other tropical fruits pour from the bubbly head, which has excellent retention, and the hops smack you in the face on the first sip.  Despite being only a 67 on the IBU scale and 6.5% on the ABV end, this pale ale drinks way heavier.  With a pleasant malt start, the beer gives way to a chewy ending with an almost warming alcohol finish, complete with a hop splash down.

Overall, the Alpha King reigns, and while not one of their high end beers, such as the Dark Lord or Apocalypse Cow, it is a good representation of the Three Floyds brand and I look forward to enjoying, hopefully, many more of their beers in the future.
